Sale Of The Century returned to the NBC daytime lineup in 1983 with Jim Perry as host. Three contestants started off with $20 and answered trivia questions. Each correct answer was worth $5, but an incorrect answer cost a contestant $5.

At certain periods during the game, an "Instant Bargain" was offered to the contestant who had the lead in the game. There, the contestant was offered a fabulous prize at a great price. (i.e. a contestant would be offered a TV that would normally cost $1,000 for only $12!) If the person went for the bargain, the price would be deducted from the score. There were also three "Fame Games" played. There, a person, place, or thing was described and the first contestant to buzz in with the correct answer won a pick on the Fame Game board. The Fame Game board originally had squares that featured the faces of nine celebrities. The faces would eventually be replaced by numbers. Behind each square were prizes, a $10, $15, and $25 money card that would be added to the score.
The speed round came after the third fame game. Contestants had 60 seconds to answer as many questions in the allotted time. The contestant with the most money at the end was the winner.

Originally, at the end of the game, a contestant could either buy a prize with the money accumulated, or save it and come back on the next show to try to win more money and save up for a bigger prize. In one case, if a contestant won a total of $610, they could win all the prizes on the stage including a cash jackpot which started at $50,000 and increased by $1,000 each day it was not won. That changed in 1987 when the Winner's Board was introduced. The board had 20 numbered squares and the contestant selected one number at a time until they matched a prize (just like Concentration). The contestant won the first matched prize. The bonus round changed again in 1988 when the contestant played for a cash jackpot by solving four "six clue puzzles" in twenty seconds. The jackpot started at $5,000, and increased by $1,000 when not won.
